CAT is a national level MBA entrance exam for admission to 21 IIMs, 8 IITs, and 1000+ other b-schools in India. It is conducted once every year by the IIMs in online CBT mode at 400+ test centers in 155 cities of India. This year, a new IIM (21st) has been added to the list- IIM Mumbai (earlier NITIE Mumbai). Also, starting this year, admission to IIFT will be through CAT scores.
Starting 2021, CAT exam now comprises only 66 questions- 24 from VARC, 20 from DILR, and 22 from Quantitative Aptitude. Out of these, about 75% are multiple choice questions and the rest are TITA questions (non-MCQs). The marking scheme of CAT exam remains unchanged. 3 marks are awarded to every question accompanied by negative marking of 1 mark per MCQ. 40 minutes are given to attempt each section.
Overall, the difficulty level of the exam is moderate to high. The topics you need to focus on during preparation for CAT VARC should be reading comprehension and para jumbles. For CAT Quant preparation, the focus areas should be arithmetic and algebra. For DILR preparation, games & tournaments, combination charts and arrangements (logical and seating) are the most important. Also, attempting CAT mock tests and analyzing them later is the best source to maximize your scores. Check CAT 2023 Syllabus with Weightage
CAT exam is not about attempting all the questions. It is more about attempting the right number of questions with accuracy. 100 percentile in CAT does not mean that the candidate has scored a full 198 marks. It just indicates that he has scored more than all other CAT applicants. Based on CAT score vs percentile analysis of the last 2 years, you need to attempt at least 45 questions with 95% accuracy to get a score above 100 or 99+ percentile.
