Major Changes in CBSE Board Exams as per NCF 2023
The Ministry of Education announced that board exams will be conducted twice a year from 2025 onwards. Central Government released a New Curriculum Framework (NCF) for schools on August 23 according to which several major changes were announced for the board examinations.
The new curriculum is a part of the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) that introduces major changes in the conventional school education system in India. The major highlights of NCF for School Education 2023 are as follows:
- The board exams will be conducted twice and students will have the option to retain the best out of the two scores.
- For Class 11 and 12, students will have to compulsorily study two languages, one should be an Indian language.
- The board exams will now majorly focus on assessing understanding and competencies rather than memorizing concepts.
- Currently students from Class 9 to 12 study 5 compulsory subjects and one optional subject but now compulsory subjects will be 7 for Class 9 and 10 and 6 for Class 11 and 12.
Apart from these changes, students will now have more flexibility in choosing their subjects rather than a particular stream. The optional subjects will be grouped under 4 parts to allow students to choose combinations of subjects as per their choice.
- First Group – This will include languages. Students must choose any two languages (one should be Indian).
- Second Group – It will include Art, Physical Education, and Vocational Education.
- Third Group – Subjects from Humanities, Social Science, and other interdisciplinary areas will be included in Group 2.
- Fourth Group – This group will contain subjects from Science, Mathematics, and Computational Thinking.
