Sylvia N. Gichia
Sylvia Gichia is an arts management consultant with over 8 years experience in the visual arts field in Kenya, East and Southern Africa. Sylvia has a passion for the arts and until most recently spent most of her time running the Kuona Trust, a successful and leading visual art centre in Nairobi that is dedicated to advancing the skills and opportunities of contemporary visual artists in Kenya and the region. She has an in-depth knowledge of the contemporary art scene in East Africa, great relationships with the organisations that work with artists and the artists themselves. Her expertise places her uniquely to consult on contemporary and modern African art to different audiences, art institutions and international organizations. Sylvia comes from a business and marketing background and also holds a degree in photography from the Washington School of Photography. She has worked in a variety of art fields for the past 9 years locally and internationally, and has amassed a wide range of skills. Sylvia speaks in various forums on African contemporary art topics and advises many regional art organisations on the same. She has been a member of the Kenya Photography Awards jury for the last 3 years, was part of the national adjudication team for the prestigious Barclays L’atelier Art Competition 2016. Most recently, Sylvia was appointed on the East African Wildlife Society Photography Award jury. Sylvia is a founding member and was the Fair Director of the Kenya Art Fair that is now in its 5th year. She has delivered trainings and facilitated sessions for artists in East Africa on topics of Arts Marketing, Business of Art and Fundraising for the Arts. Sylvia is an active member of the Kenya Copyright Board of Directors where she sits on the Legal and Technical committee and the Communications and Business development committee.
